Spina Bifida – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Options
The Latin term “spina bifida” means “split spine” when translated. It is a birth defect, whose causes are not clearly understood. It is probably caused by a combination of environmental factors, folic acid deficiency and the corresponding predisposition. It results in the so-called “neural tube” of the embryo, from which the spinal cord and spine develop, not closing properly. The result is often paraplegia of varying degrees.
Symptoms of this disease
In children and adults, the symptoms of spina bifida are more or less pronounced. Basically, there are two main forms of spina bifida that can be distinguished, which are accompanied by a different set of adverse effects:
- Spina bifida occulta: In this case, the meninges and spinal cord are not affected. Spina bifida occulta often causes no symptoms.
- Spina bifida: In case of this kind of spina bifida, those affected suffer from neurological disorders such as numbness, paralysis and bladder problems. This is especially true in case of myelomeningocele. In this case, a bulging of the spinal cord and nerve roots is present. In case of a myelocele, the spinal cord is completely exposed.
Which symptoms are caused by spina bifida differs depending on the case at hand. Many patients are affected by paralysis, bladder and colon function disorders as well as deformations such as club or pointed feet. Additionally, they often experience sensory disturbances.
Spina bifida treatment
In the case of spina bifida aperta, immediate surgery is usually required. But even then, lifelong medical care is usually necessary to alleviate the consequences of the disease and to prevent deterioration. This includes frequently repeated operations and targeted orthopedic treatment.
Many years of experience and studies show that GIGER MD® therapy is the most effective form of treatment for spina bifida. Thanks to the regular training with modern therapy instruments, even severe paralysis and paresthesia may improve remarkably and thus the quality of life of those affected increases significantly.
